The European Central Bank has introduced Appia, a new roadmap focused on the future of tokenised finance in Europe. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The initiative is designed to support the development of a European tokenised financial ecosystem while keeping central bank money at the centre of the system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In simple terms, the ECB is preparing for a financial system where assets, transactions and settlement processes can increasingly move onto digital infrastructure such as distributed ledger technology. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It sees tokenisation as a way to improve efficiency across the lifecycle of financial assets, from issuance and trading to settlement and servicing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The roadmap is part of a broader strategy that includes Pontes, the Eurosystem\u2019s DLT-based settlement solution, which is expected to launch in the third quarter of 2026. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

While Pontes is focused on enabling settlement in central bank money for DLT-based transactions, Appia has a wider and longer-term role in exploring how Europe\u2019s wholesale financial ecosystem could evolve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
