The Powerledger whitepaper provides a comprehensive update on the company’s transition to a high-performance public blockchain, emphasizing its commitment to innovation and sustainability in the energy sector. The document outlines the evolution of Powerledger’s blockchain components and the introduction of a dynamic transaction fee system, which simplifies the use of blockchain for energy applications while retaining the utility of the POWR token.

Transition to a High-performance Public Blockchain

Powerledger has moved from an Ethereum-based blockchain to a proof-of-stake public blockchain, launching its own blockchain based on Solana code with customizations for energy marketplaces and other distributed energy applications. This transition, which took place on July 31, 2023, aims to address the need for low fees and high throughput to process high-frequency microtransactions, such as those required for peer-to-peer energy trading and tracking. The new blockchain leverages proof-of-stake and proof-of-history protocols to achieve significant energy efficiency improvements over other layer one protocols.

Powerledger Blockchain Capabilities

The Powerledger blockchain offers opportunities for validators and application developers, providing mature, smart contract capabilities, staking incentives, and transaction fees. Developers can benefit from the blockchain’s high-speed transaction processing and efficient smart contract execution, as well as the ability to customize fee structures to align with their applications’ value propositions.

Introducing A Transaction Fee Model

Powerledger has replaced the previous escrow model with a transaction fee model that operates at two levels: the layer one blockchain level and the application level. At the blockchain level, fees compensate validators and provide economic stability to the network. Applications on the blockchain can implement their own fee structures, such as annual license fees or, per kWh usage fees for energy trading applications, or percentage fees for energy attribute certificate marketplaces.

Ongoing Use of POWR Token

While Powerledger’s energy applications will migrate to the new blockchain, the POWR token will remain on Ethereum and continue to serve as an access token. A smart contract bridge will allow POWR to be locked on Ethereum and receive corresponding native tokens on the Powerledger blockchain, which can be used to pay transaction fees and secure the blockchain through staking and delegation. The bridge ensures that POWR tokens can only exist on Ethereum or as Powerledger native tokens at any one time, maintaining the token’s utility and allowing for De-Fi protocol use across both blockchains.

Powerledger Blockchain for the Sustainable Energy Future

Powerledger’s global pilots and commercial ventures have demonstrated the need for a blockchain capable of handling a high volume of transactions with minimal energy consumption and low fees. The blockchain must support a decentralized energy landscape with the ability to process thousands of transactions per trading interval, which is essential for peer-to-peer energy trading networks.

Versioning for Continuous Functionality Expansion

The whitepaper introduces a dynamic approach to functionality expansion, with continuous improvements and innovations to meet the changing needs of the energy market. Powerledger will provide version-specific updates to document the development and integration of new features into the ecosystem.

For Developers

The Powerledger blockchain is designed to be developer-friendly, offering sub-second confirmation times, tens of thousands of transactions per second, low transaction costs, and easy scalability. Developers will have access to a rich set of tools, libraries, and API integrations to facilitate the development of decentralized apps (DApps).

Conclusion

The updated Powerledger Lightpaper reflects the company’s dedication to driving positive change in the energy sector through the adoption of a high-performance public blockchain. Powerledger invites the community and stakeholders to participate in this evolution, which aims to make sustainable energy more accessible. The company encourages developers, innovators, entrepreneurs, and energy companies to build apps and integrate data into this transformative blockchain, creating a sustainable energy future for all.
